Welcome

Welcome to Chitactac-Adams Heritage County Park. This beautiful and culturally significant 4.3-acre park site is located just minutes from the cities of Gilroy and Morgan Hill. The park features the beautiful Uvas Creek and a wealth of cultural artifacts including bedrock mortars and petroglyphs left by the Ohlone Indians. The park includes a self-guided interpretive walk and an interpretive shelter focusing on Ohlone Indian culture and the Adams schoolhouse which was sited on this property from the 1850s until 1956.

From Highway 101, take the Tennant Avenue exit in Morgan Hill and proceed west towards Monterey Highway. Turn left (south)on Monterey Highway and travel approximately 0.5 mile south to Watsonville Road. Take Watsonville Road west 5.5 miles to the park site which is located on the west side of the road across from the intersection of Watsonville Road and Burchell Road.
Activities

Chitactac Adams Heritage County Park offers a unique view into the Native American culture of Santa Clara County before and after the arrival of the Spanish. A self-guided interpretive walk around the site, including eight stations with interpretive panels, is supplemented by an interpretive shelter with seven additional panels and displays. The trail panels include photographs and original art covering the Adams School, Ohlone village life, Ohlone buildings, petroglyphs (rock art), Ohlone food processing, natural history of Uvas Creek, Spanish, California and Ohlone culture and petroglyphs and their preservation.

The site includes portable water and a limited number of picnic tables, but no barbecue facilities are available.

The park is open daily year round from 8am-sunset.  The self-guided tour and exhibit shelter are accessible all times the park is open.  Staff-led programs and group tours are available by appointment for groups of 10 or more.  Please call (408) 323-0107 for program informaion and availability.  Teachers packets are available online and materials are available for classroom loan.  Go to the "for teachers" page for more information about these and other resources for educators.
